June II: I scream, you scream

28. June 2006

We all scream for ice cream*.

6. End notes: Surveys and ice cream

A few important things we should know before getting down to business.
It's really hot here where I type, so I am sitting at my desk, dreaming of ice cream.
From the fine people at Ice Cream Recipe, I learned that: "Ice cream as an industry has an estimated global value of £7.5 billion" and that "the world's top 5 consumers of
ice cream in order: United States of America, New Zealand, Denmark, Australia, Belgium/Luxembourg." The UK yearly consumption of ice cream is "estimated
at 8 litres per person
", but fear not, in America it's "circa 21 litres per person per year".

Surprisingly, and totally unrelated, a recent study found that middle-aged Brits are healthier than Americans.

In this month's extremely fit newsletter, we take on new products, great partners, an expat blogger, Spreadshirt offline. We take down FIFA, and we have a little competition too.

Blogger of the Month

Regular Jen

First of all, the name is a lie. An expatriated American, living in London, she blogs her adventures with travel and food. Who is Jen? A list of her experiences includes: "a cancer survivor. I have decided I’m not getting it again. Ever." and "I used to be a skateboarder. I was best at ramp/halfpipe" and "I was 'Janet' in the Rocky Horror Picture Show for most of a year. I loved it. I had to sing live in my underwear" and "I used to play paintball and got pretty decent at it. I sold my gear to help fund my move" and "I was a radio DJ for a summer. I was about 18 years old. My main show was cool. I had fans". Have a crush yet?

derby store

Spreadshirt Offline

The Derby Store

Our first experiment in the world of offline business, the Derby Store opened in the very chique Berlin. With shirts exclusively from design competitions and the Derby, the shop is about promoting designers not just their t-shirts. Plus handy computers set up in the store so visitors can check out current Derbyers and vote for what should appear next in the shop. Exciting.

If you happen to be in Berlin, you can check it out: Gabelsberger Str. 16, at the U-Bahn stop Samariterstr. For more photos and more inspiration, check out the Derby blog at: www.english.derbz.com.

Employee of the Month: Andrea

Or: Mommy, why is FIFA crying?

FIFA has spent a fair amount of time knocking on our door the past few weeks. Before going out like lambs for the sacrifice, we sent Andrea, master of the sword and the stick. The former judge, Andrea's been Spreadshirt's lawyer for the past 13 months.

A mother of two, running, swimming and piano playing enthusiast, a fighter and a multi-tasker. And the result: no more fear for Spreadsters, you can design and order what you like. For that: many, many thanks, Andrea!
New Survey

End Notes

The survey from last month is still running, we're going to give it a full month to let everyone fill it out. The topics: what services do you use, like, hate, wish we had.

* Oh yeah, the competition. Where does the subject line quote come from? Three random correct emails will get a pint of Ben&Jerry's! Viva la summer.
